Sand and Surf

                              5x7 $90
There's a  lot I like about this little painting. I think I may do a larger version, but I may change a few things. If you have any gut responses to the compositon- especially constructive criticism- I'd love to hear them! I really value the input I get from fellow painters.

  1. I don't have any constructive criticism because I love it the way it is! I have not tried any figures in oils but these flesh colors look great to me and I like the composition. It makes me want to see what they are looking at out in the ocean!

  2. I really like everything about this.I'd like to be sitting on that beach. You perfectly captured the feel of a sunny day at the coast. If I had one question it would be about the angle of the man's leg.I don't know, do you think it leads the eye out of the composition?

  4. I agree with Dennis. The gentleman's legs and the stron tilt to the shore lead your eye right out of the painting. Because there is the kind of empty space in the top left corner, there isn't really anything to bring us back in. Really a very lovely job with the flesh tones. You really did a fantastic job with the people!

  5. Thanks to Shelby and Doug for the compositional input. You to confirm what I suspected. In fact, I added the green beach towel to try to bring the eye back in to the composition. I may change this painting, or just try it again with the corrections. Thanks!!!!

  7. Layne,
Just lovely composition and the skin tones are really, really good. Love all the bits of sunshine on them. I am new to all of this so was interested in what the artists above said about the leg leading your eye out- I did not find that so but was busy looking at the skin and colors:) Really wonderful and I think would be great done bigger also:)
